Subject:
The development of postal services in Scotland in 120 years that encompassed the Union of Crowns with England, several wars, civil war, plague, revolution, famine and the Union of Parliaments. Initially, letters were carried by private arrangement, merchant posts and burgh posts. Over time organised, structured posts developed which were available for public use. A Scottish Post Office was created, only to be absorbed, in 1711, into a new British Post Office.
