Event Notes
Event Note
At the outset of the American Civil War there was an outpouring of patriotic fervour in both the North (Union) and South (Confederate), and some of this zeal was translated into the production of patriotic envelopes. In the North, many thousands of different designs were produced, but in the South, due to their limited printing and paper resources, only some 200 or so different designs are known, and of the examples that have survived the numbers are small making them scarce to very rare. This display and presentation illustrate examples of many of these together with patriotic stickers and seals and concludes with Confederate use of captured Union patriotic covers.
