Event Notes
Event Note
Liberia was settled beginning in 1820, and this display discusses the first 100 years of Liberian Philately. The display is organized into four main sections: 1) The Stampless Years, 2) The Todhunter Issues of 1860-1892, 3) The Waterlow and Sons Issues of 1892-1906, and 4) The Perkins Bacon Issues of 1897-1919. A significant amount of Waterlow and Perkins Bacon archival material and post-production sample stamps are shown, and this material gives insight into the printer’s methods and processes. Liberia’s first nineteen Provisional Surcharge Issues are discussed. Important postal history highlights include First Issue and Numerical Issue usages, Registered and Official mail, and Registration stationery and Provisional Surcharge usage.
