Event Notes
Event Note
The 1607 founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America, helped shape the future nation’s government, language, customs, and beliefs. In 1907 the U.S. Post Office Department issued a three-stamp issue commemorating the 300th Anniversary of the Jamestown settlement. The 1907 Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition was held on Sewell’s Point, on the shores of Hampton Roads, VA, home of the North Atlantic Navy Fleet. Differing from previous fairs, the exposition had a strong military presence and international naval participation. The display covers the development and production of the stamps, and the domestic, foreign, and exposition mail use.
