Event Notes
Event Note
The Baghdad stamps were issued on 1 September 1917 and were available for 17 days only when stocks were no longer available at the post office. This presentation gives a brief history from the start of the Mesopotamia Campaign until the capture of Baghdad two and a half years later. The Political Officer, Sir Percy Cox, regarded overprinting enemy stamps as both a measure annoying to the enemy and useful from a political standpoint as it demonstrated a change of administration. Postage stamps, by reason of their widespread distribution offer one of the most effective means of propaganda. All 25 issued stamps, including the majority of known errors, are shown. All of them are also shown on local and international covers. The 11 stamps that were printed but not issued due to the small number known of each are included. A presentation set given to King George V by General Maude and the five types of postal stationery envelopes are also included.
