Event Note
The display covers the philately of this Caribbean island from its first becoming a Colony at the end of the Seven Years War through to the current reign. The early postal markings are followed by a detailed examination of the De La Rue definitive series used up until 1938 and with particular strength in proof material. The fascinating George VI period follows with Dominica’s own imposition of a Wartime surcharge, the introduction of censorship and the Colony leaving the Leeward Islands administratively. Research that has not been previously published will be presented. Leeward Island stamps used in Dominica are examined as is the postal stationery of the island. The display will also look at aspects of the island’s maritime mail, its village postal markings and early postcards.
