type (ED270) struck in red.
Backstamped with the Head Office Bishop Mark for "MY 17" type (ED6b) in red.
The front of the letter is endorsed
"Pr. Favr. Capt. Brown W.G.P." (Who God Preserve).
Rated at "2" in manuscript being l d for the Ship and 1d for postage from Leith.
From approximately 1770 to 1803 there were two types of Edinburgh Ship Letter handstamps.
Leith Ship Letter handstamps came into use in 1803
at which point the Edinburgh handstamps were no longer used.
The Leith Ship Letter handstamps continued in use until 1908 at which time all handstamps became
incorporated under Edinburgh.
