‘METEOR’ EXPEDITION MAIL
The German Meteor expedition (1925 ~1927), operating with early sonar equipment, undertook an
oceanographic survey which produced the first detailed map of the South Atlantic Ocean seabed,
from the equatorial region to Antarctica
1926 Expedition mail sent by the Medical Officer Kraft to Wilhelmshaven, Germany
at UPU rate, tied by SS.2, JA 26 26; taken by SS Meteor to South Georgia, transit stamped FE 6 26
[On 1 January 1926, UPU rate reverted to the 2½d rate, previously in operation until 1922,
but it is not recorded when notice of this change reached South Shetland Post Office]
