Interrupted Departure
During the winter months, departures from New York did not always
go as planned. "During Gladiator's departure, she became pressed
ashore by harbor ice abreast of the flag staff of the battery at the
tip of Manhattan Island. Efforts to remove her were not successful,
which delayed her departure until February 1, 1840." (New York
Daily Economist January 24, 1840)
