The new design was executed by a Chilean artist and only five values were printed initially
(lc,2c,5c,10c and 20c) as a direct follow on t.o the 1867 issue.A 50 centavos value was added later in
1878 to satisfy parcel post requirements.
Chile did not join the Universal Postal Union until 1881 and so the colours of these first stamps were
not in line with UPU directives.
Nine million copies of these stamps were ordered and the stamps were received in August 1877. Their
use was authorized on Sept. t4th 1877:
