Museum and Archive Collections
The nucleus of the Museum was formed in the 1870s with the accumulation of the
RPSLs records. From the late 1890s these papers included records of the activities
of the Expert Committee and Lord Crawford’s entire philatelic correspondence.
The first recorded example of a museum artefact coming to the Society was in
1893 when it agreed to buy 12 original dies and 3 electrotype plates of the stamps
of Prince Edward Island from Douglas Garth and JA Tilleard.
Since then, the RPSL has acquired a large collection of artefacts and records and it
is committed to the preservation and development of this collection. The
collection has a high historic and monetary value and is a valuable resource for
research on many aspects of philately and wider social, cultural and economic
history.
The collection of The Spear Museum of Philatelic History at The Royal Philatelic
Society London falls under the following themes…
