The marks on the front show a  Is  7d  credit  by  the  Cape  Colony  post  office  to  the  
UK post  office  in  red  crayon  to ,the  right  under  the  address;  '16'  meaning  J6c  for  the  
cost  of the  transatlantic  joumey  by  a  United  States  mail  packet  which  was  credited  
by  the  British  post  office  to  the  United  States  post  office;  '5'  meaning  Se  for  the  cost  
of the  intemal  US  postage.  The  '5'  was  applied  in  Philadelphia.
