The Sixpence Stamp 1859 to 1895

1859	  First Printing. No Watermark. Comb Perf 14 with wing margins at sides of panes.

The issued stamps, printed in dull purple, were despatched on 21 June 1859 and put on sale in Freetown on
21 September the same year. When the first stamps for Sierra Leone were ordered, the only requirement was
for a sixpence value to pay the half-ounce letter rate to the United Kingdom.

All stamps on letters posted prior to August 1865 are from the first printing. This letter is correctly paid for
the single letter rate to the UK. The manuscript 5 represents the 5d credit to the British post office.
