From 1 June 1855 to 31 March 1879 the half-ounce letter rate to the United Kingdom was 6d. On these two
covers, the Liverpool handstamps prove that the letters were carried by British packets, the the 5d credit to
the UK being marked by the manuscript 5 in violet ink.
