EFFECT OF STEAM 1838 -1840 The Orpheus
THE BLACK BALL LINE
Regular service provided by steamers, starting in April, 1838, had a
negative impact on The Black Ball Line. The shorter westerly crossing
of the steamers could not be matched by the sailing vessels. Thus
1838 began a period of adjustment for packet lines as they modified
their interiors for more cargo and immigrant passengers.
