This cover was sent from London on 30th January 1995 addressed to Bugojno in central Bosnia but
was returned to the sender by Royal Mail with a label reading, with typical British understatement,
'There is no service to Bosnia-Herzegovina due to the current situation... 'The 'situation' was
the Bosnian War which started on 6th April 1992. It was characterised by bitter fighting,
indiscriminate shelling and ethnic cleansing. Events such as the Siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica
massacre later became notorious symbols of the conflict. The war ended with the Dayton Peace
Agreement; finally signed on 14th December 1995 in Paris.
