In 1988, John Major, Conservative MP for Huntingdon, was Chief Secretary to the Treasury, having
entered the Cabinet in June 1987. His later rise to power was as Chancellor of the Exechequer, and then
as Prime Minister. John Major was made a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter in 2005.
Sir Bernard Weatherill, later Lord Weatherill, was The Speaker from 1983 to 1992 and died in 1997,
John Major attending his memorial service.
