Indicium 8½d with 6d Extra Registration

The minimum inland registration fee of 6d for £5 cover was superseded
on 1 Jun 1956 when the cheapest fee became 1s for £10 cover. A feature
of the embossed design was that the lead time for a new denomination was
relatively long, leading to provisional arrangements.
The Post Office needed to print new envelopes which detailed on the back
the revised compensation figures; at the same time the main heading on the
front was to be reworded to become INLAND REGISTERED LETTER rather
than the extant REGISTERED LETTER. Due to the slowness of obtaining a
new 1s 2½d embossing die, it was decided to print each envelope with a
       double-ringed design reading MINIMUM REGISTRATION / 6 / EXTRA.

There was a stock of Size F and K envelopes and these were used by adding
only the double-ringed EXTRA 6 design, leaving the incorrect compensation

‘fee of 6d’ information on the back. These envelopes are both scarce.
