Wth the closure of the British Post Offices in Japan in 1871 the Japanese established their

own postal system. Japanese cancellations can be found on Hong Kong adhesives of the late

Queen Wctoria and early King Edward issues. They normally consist of a thick circular hand
stamp with an internal diameter of 22-23 mm and are struck in violet and black. The name
[NAGASAKI, KOBE, etc] is around the top and the date in the middle. Sometimes the letters
I.J.P.O. appear round the bottom, probably from Japanese post offices abroad, e.g. Dairen
and Shanghai or MEIJI, the name of the region.
