September 15, 1987. Launch of ECS-4 (later named Eutelsat I F4) to replace ECS 3 lost due to the
Ariane-3 failure in September 1985. The payload carried twelve 14/11 GHz transponders (including
two spare transponders). Cover canceled with the new manual Ariane 3 launch postmark which has
been in use until Oct. 1989.
July 21, 1988. Launch of ECS 5 (also known as Eutelsat I F5). Five ECS satellites were produced and
launched altogether. Although the planned working life was of seven years, three ECS/Eutelsat 1
spacecraft were still operational at the end of 1994.
