EARLY INWARD MAIL, PREDATING PORT FOSTER POST OFFICE
Before the South Shetlands Post Office was established at ‘Port Foster’, Deception Island, mail was
entrusted to departing whalers promising conveyance to Stanley for cancellation and onward transmission
The card, headed ‘South Shetlands, 14/12 (19)11’, was sent by a whaler, who reported a catch of 50 whales
and referred to a Salvesen ship that is to go to the Falklands with mail
Datestamped on arrival at Stanley by F.4E on 20 January 1912
On 23 January 1912, overseas mail left Stanley taken by SS Junin (a PSNC passenger & cargo steamer) on
the return voyage to London
This postcard is one of the earliest known, sent a year before the post office was opened
