        FALMOUTH PACKET

In 1683 the English established packet services to provide regular service
for government correspondence. This provided a monthly service that
was eventually opened to regular mail. It was privately manned, but
in the later stages naval vessels gradually replaced the civilian. When
the Black Ball line started regular packet service, this was the only
competition. The Falmouth packets did not sail to Halifax in the winter
months. Therefor service was not very reliable.
