COMPETITION 1822-1830 The Hercules - Double Letter and
RED STAR LINE Last Voyage
Black Ball Line success did not go unnoticed. When the 1819 - 1820
recession did not hamper operations of Black Ball's packets,other
companies slowly initiated their own packet services. The first was
the Red Star Line. With four vessels, Meteor, Manhattan, Panthea and
Hercules they started regular departures from New York to Liverpool
on January 25, 1822, They maintained this schedule through the
period of this study.
