COMPETITION 1822-1830 The Leeds- Interrupted Voyage
Blue Swallowtail Line
The Leeds when departin9 Liverpool January 5, 1825, went aground
on the North Bank. Also departing on January 5 were two Black Ball
Packets, the Canada and the Florida. The cover indicates a New York
arrival date of February 4, 1825. Research shows that the Florida
arrived New York two days later with news boat, carrying mail to the
city. These dates suggest that mail was transferred and continued to
New York on the Florida.

The Leeds, when finally brought to Kings Dock Basin was declared irreparable.
However, due to unique construction of American packets, although both
bow and stern hung suspended in mid air for several days, she returned by
March 16, 1825 to her schedule. American packets were constructed with
first deck below top deck caulked and planked in same manner as top deck.
This additional detail gave them a unique amount of structural strength,
longer service and enhanced handling. Observing this detail, British ship
builders adopted this technique.
