COMPETITION 1822 -1830 The Hudson - Double Letter
BLACKXLINE
The Black X Line provided packet service from New York to London starting in
1824. The initial fleet consisted of the Acasta, Hudson, Brighton and Crisis sailing
the 1st of the month from New York and the 5th of the month from London.
A stop was scheduled at Portsmouth to either drop off or pick up mail. English
law required ships to turn in any mail at the first port of call before breaking
bulk cargo. Therefore many covers carried by these vessels bear postmarks
from various out-ports along the English channel. Packets continued to London.
Mail, dispatched to London by mail coach, arrived London before the vessel.
