COMPETITION 1822 -1830 The Columbia - First Voyage
BLACK BALL LINE The fames Cropper- First Voyage
Response by the Black Ball Line to new competition was swift and effective. Starting with the
March 1, 1822, departure of the Amity, the Black Ball Line started two monthly sailings from
New York and two from Liverpool. Packets departed from New York and Liverpool the 1st and
16th of the month. To maintain this schedule they added four ships to their packet fleet, the
James Cropper, William Thompson, New York, and Columbia.
