EFFECT OF STEAM 1838-1840 The Europe Same Letter
Black Ball Line Forwarded
A unique cover, mailed from Belfast to New York. In New York
receiver readdressed the letter, gave it to forwarding agent who
placed it on the next Black Ball outbound packet. All in the same
day.
This illustrates two different rates for a letter following the same
path from posting to port and port to delivery point.

Letter posted Belfast February 16 1839 too late for processing. Letter
sent forward for a special fee of2d, red notation upper left on back (next
page). Black BELFAST/FE 16/1839/LATE" is mackay type 1089 on
back and BLACK BELFAST/FE 17/1839"isMackaytype 139. Letter
proceeded to Liverpool, dispatched on Black Ball Packet Europe.
Addressee in New York scratched out incoming address and forwarded
letter back to Belfast through New York Forwarding Agent Gilipins
Exchange Reading Room and Foreign Letter Office.
