RED STAR LINE
More rapid steam crossings had the same impact on the Red Star
line_ as other packet lines. They continued to offer packet service,
but cargo character gradually deteriorated to accommodate different
interests and needs.

Letter paid and posted to meet the
packet in Liverpool. The blue boxed
"IRVINE I 6 JA 1838" is Mackay
type 218. In 1837, Irvine was the
first town to use these stamps. The
red double oval Liverpool Ship
Letter stamp is Robertson type
S6 in use 1837-1838. The black
"TOO LATE" Mackay type 1128,
was applied at Edinburgh and only
used during 1838 in this color.
Ship Information
The Saint Andrew departed
Liverpool January 9, 1838,
arrived New York March 8,
1838. She replaced the England
in 1835. She was one of the
packets lost in the Liverpool
1839 hurricane.
