FIRST DEFINITIVE ISSUE
DESIGN FORERUNNERS
1952-30rn OCTOBER- ?1h anniversary of the re-establishment of civil administration in the Territory.
New issue approved by the Minister of Territories (F' May 1950).
Designs based upon photographs sourced from the New Guinea Handbook submitted to the artists of
the Note Printing Branch (NPB), (CBA, Melb ).
Final designs selected by the Stamp Advisory Committee (Port Moresby) in conjunction with the
TPNG (Treasury); Dept of Territories (Aust); the NPB (CBA); the Australian Post Office and the
Australian Stamp Advisory Committee.
All values engraved using steel dies (numbers 5500- 5507) and nickel plated copper plates. Printed in
one step rotary recess with imprint in left hand comer bottom sheet margin. Initially printed on
Wiggins Teape cream, un-watermarked paper, in sheets of 72 (6 rows x 12 units per row), for Yid, ld,
2d, 2Y:zd, 3d, 3Y:zd, and 36 (6x6) for all other values.
Paper supplied in reams and cut into smaller sheets based on the Australian small size definitives. All
values comb perforated. White gum.
Initial order dispatched 27th June 1952, thereafter quarterly. Additionally, a quantity was sent to the
Australian Trade Commissioner in New York (USA) for sale to local collectors and dealers.
Plates were destroyed 6/12/1961(2Y:zd,3Y:zd, 6Y:zd, 7Y:zd, and 1 pound) and 19/4/1967 (ld, 2d, 3d, 2/-
and 10/-). Values not invalidated.
DESIGN FORERUNNERS
Several of the final designs were based in part on previous issues for either Papua or New Guinea.
