In 1871: U.K. life expectancy rises to 41, Great Fire in Chicago, Stanley finds Livingstone.
At the PSL: It was decided to print and distribut e to members, free of charge, a paper on
Spanish postmarks by Sn. De Figueroa that had been presented to the Society, establishing a
long tradit ion of compliment ary hand-outs.
PSL President was Sir Daniel Cooper, Bart., F.R.G.S. Membership was declining.

27 January 1871 ld Pink envelope uprated with 6d Lilac and 2d Blue and used from London
with original contents concerning the division of his recently deceased father, Waterloo
veteran Phillip Sandilands' estate. The addressee Edward Vincent Sandilands (1847-71) was
killed in a boating accident in Fiji and had won first prize, for the County of Midlothian, in the
1864 Royal Horticultural Competition for a collection of pressed plants whilst a student at
Edinburgh University.
