In 1876: Queen Victoria declared Empress of India, Russia conquers Uzbekistan, Custer's last
stand at Little Big Horn, 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' published, telephone invented.
At the PSL: Tapling, aged 20, was elected to the Committee. Plan devised to produce a
catalogue of Great Britain and her Colonies. Work started with British North America.
PSL President was Sir Daniel Cooper, Bart., F.R.G.S. Membership stood at 15 and was rising.

Adhesives total a rate of ls lYid, which consists of ls packet rate Jamaica to the UK, plus 2Yid to Italy,
less ld GB inland rate. The 'MORE TO PAY' handstamp indicates it was initially underpaid, requiring
additional adhesives to be added. The 2Yid rate to Italy was the standard GPU rate to Europe,
introduced December 1875. Authority for the ld bisect was withdrawn four years earlier but seems
to have been accepted in this case.
