This cover was sent from Beckenham, England on 17 February 1879 with a hand illustrated
pen drawing of a Zulu warrior batting away a 1874 6p stamp depicting Queen Victoria, to an
attorney in Cape Town by way of the Dublin Castle packet ship. Bottom left shows a caption
for the Zulu warrior of "GET-OUT-OF-Y-WAY-0." Mail sent from England in the early period
of the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War to recipients in southern Africa with content related to the
conflict is quite scarce. This cover is even more extraordinary when combined with the
unique nature of the illustrated Zulu warrior and the overt political message.
