Chile-Germany Treaty Mail
Prior to joining the UPU in 1881, Chile had a bilateral treaty for mail going to Germany or through Germany to
other European and Scandinavian countries. This treaty was effective from J an.1 st 187 5. If the mail was sent on
German or French ships the rate was 20 centavos per 15 grams but if sent via Southampton on English ships
through Colon or via Liverpool by English ships through the Magellan Straits, then the charge was 25 centavos
per 15 grams.
Oct.12th 1878 from Vallenar to Lunenburg in Germany franked 25 centavos
Endorsed per "Lima"
The "Lima" was the second PSNC vessel to bear this name and was built in 1873. In 1880 during the war of
the Pacific the "Lima" towed a ship full of contraband to Peru resulting in the dismissal of her captain. The ship
was lost off the coast of Chile in 1909.
