The provinces are named after members ofthe board ofthe British North Bomeo Co., former govemors and other worthies, by 1929 and probably
much earlier, these had been replaced by the more prosaic, but memorable: West Coast Residency, Kudat Residency Interior Residency, Sandakan
Residency and Bast Coast Residency.
