The Fint Stamp; tbe 2c brown of March 1883
Tue first stamp, the 2 cents brown was engraved by Thomas Macdonald and featured the shield with lion
above surmounted by a scroll inscnbed 'NORTH POSTAGE BORNEO' and the tablet below containing the
value in English and to each side the value in Malay and Chinese. This design was the basis of all the low
values stamps of North Borneo prior to 1894. -

In issued colour on thin un-watermarked paper, imperf.. These are the only two recorded by Panbro, p6.

Stamps printed by Blades, Bast and Blades perforated 'CANCELLED' extending over three stamps.

Tbis is the typical method by used security printers to invalidate cheques etc. North Bomeo was not a member
of the UPU, therefore presumably used to invalidate file and presentation copies of stamps.
