1883 '8 Cents' provisional & forgeries
The 2c stamp paid postage within North Bomeo and to Brunei and Labuan, but there was an immediate
requirement for higher value stamps as the registration fee was 1 Oe. and the letter rate to Singapore, the nonnal
transit port, was 8c, (Proud pp 205), therefore prior to the arrivqJ ofhigher value stamps in August 1883 the 2c
stamp was surcharged locally.
'8 Cents' applied vertically
Surcharged by band using a thin type, presumabJy feit to be insufficiently readable and soon replaced by the
'EIGHT CENTS' surcharge. lt is a scarce stamp. an extensive survey (Parsbro) only identified eight copies
two of which are included here. All bore blue crayon marks (presumably from registered mail).similar to the
examples below, none recorded unused. All genuine copies have to be on the 2c stamp from 'transfer 'A' as
stamps printed from 'transfer 'B' arrived with the 4c and 8c stamps.
