North Borneo: Small Shield Issue of 1888-92
Introduction: A govemm.ent notification of 1886 authorised the use of postage stamps for the
payment ofrevenue duties. Up to this time the stamps had bome the inscription 'POSTAGE' below
the shield, therefore a new set was ordered in the same ~ign but with the inscription altered to
'POSTAGE & REVENUE'. New engraved dies were prepared and the stamps lithographed by
Blades East and Blades in sheets of SO. The set consisted of nine values between ~ cent and 1 Oe
which were issued at various dates from 1888 as previous stock was exhausted.
The display: IDustrates the development of the issue by way of a number of unique items including
engraved & lithographic proofs of single values, composite proofs of seven values and a unique
registration sheet of 25 plus colour trials, 'specimen' stamps and the issued stamps (perf. & imperf.)
including a sheet of50 ofthe 1 cent orange.
