The Rt Hon. Sir John Major, KG, CH, ACIB,
First Lord of the Treasury (Prime Minister)
in Her Majesty's Government from 1990 to 1997
Generally regarded as "a decent and honourable man", John Major initially trained as a banker, hence his Associateship
qualification of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. He served as the Member of Parliament for Huntingdon from 1983
until standing down in 2001, and in a number of parliamentary roles until succeeding to the leadership of the
Conservative Party, following the resignation of Margaret Thatcher in 1990.
In April 2005, John Major was made a Knight Companion of The Order of The Garter by Queen Elizabeth II, the
personal gift of the Queen, and installed as a Garter Knight at the June 2005 ceremony at St. George's Chapel.
