Before 1999 the Silja Line ferries sailed non-stop between Helsinki and Stockholm.
However, in January 1999 the European Union ended all tax free sales on ferries
sailing between member nations. In response, from June 1999 Silja Line ferries made
a stop at the Langas ferry port at Lumparland in the Aland Islands, as the islands were
outside the European tax union and duty free sales were permitted.
