At the end of the 19th Century as the ferry service between Finland and Sweden
developed mail posted onboard the ferries and landed at Swedish ports was
postmarked with the circular datestamp of the port of arrival and a cachet reading
'FRAN FINLAND' i.e. from Finland.
1899 cover franked with a Finnish stamp posted at sea on a ferry to Sweden landed at
Stockholm. At this time most ferries to Sweden sailed from the port of Hanko
(Hango) in south western Finland.
