A ferry service between Vaasa in Finland and Ume! in Sweden has operated across
the Gulf of Bothnia since the 1950s. Mail posted on the ferries from Finland is often
postmarked at Holmsund a small coastal town that serves as the port ofUmea.

Cover posted on a ferry sailing to Sweden in 1983 franked with a Finnish stamp
which has been cancelled with the Holmsund postmark. The ferry's handstarnp has
also been applied to the cover probably by the ship's purser .
