Examples of the unsold ‘annulled’ cards are often found postally used, in later years.

When the French army invaded the town of Stans in 1798, many children
were left without a home or family. The Swiss government established an
orphanage there and recruited Pestalozzi in December 1798 to take charge
of the newly formed institution

at Birr in Canton Aargau, home for underprivileged young people.
