                BACKGROUND

                The  award  of the  contract  to  Waterlow  &  Sons  represented  a  marked  departure  in  design  from  the pre
                American Bank Note Co. series, although the use of rouletting as a means of separation did continue. Th
                Waterlow design provided a recurrent theme for some of the postal stationery in addition to the adhesive stam
                   The new head design was executed by Herbert Bourne and the resulting  stamps had all  the hallmarks
                contemporary Waterlow stamp design:

                DIE ALTERATION (referred to in the display as Type 1 & Type 2 head format)
                  The  stamp  dies  were  altered  for  aesthetic  reasons  after  the  initial  production  and  the  stamps  were  ·
                extensively  to  prepay  domestic  and  foreign  mail  basically  for  a  four  year  period from  1900  to  1904.  A
                definitive  series  printed  by  the  American  Bank  Note  Co. was  introduced  in  1901/2  but the  Waterlow  sta
                continued to be used alongside them into the middle of the decade.
