NORMANTON TYPE II

                                                             TYPEB
This town had two strikes of the same hand stamp entered in the proof books on the 12th May 1855. This represented
two different Type II hand stamps. The example in the book is the Type A but I have not seen an example of this
hand stamp. Though it has a scarcity rating of 'E' which is very scarce I have seen quite a few strikes.

I show two examples of this hand stamp above, he first is dated 15th August 1856 I think. This is seen on an envelopt
to Jamaica an unusual destination. It has a strip of 6 1d reds with just the obliterator canceling five of the stamps and
a very dirty sideways duplex hand stamp canceling the last stamp. I can not tell what the code letter is.
The second example is dated 19th January 1856 and you can just see the code letter 'F'. Although the hand stamp ha~
been used some 5 months later you can see that the strike is much clearer the stamp must have been cleaned.
