Sir Stafford Northcote, Bart., writes to his political colleague, the Rt. Hon. Benjamin Disraeli, the cover having
on the reverse an embossed coat-of-arms and the words INDIA OFFICE above. The letter has apparently not
survived, but there are at least 3 similar hand-delivered covers in existence from other important politicians of
the time, all mourning envelopes and to the same address. It is believed that this, like the ot11ers, was written
in 1872 and contained condolences to Disraeli on the death of his wife.
Sir Stafford Northcote (1818-87) held many political offices, including Secretary of State for India from 1867.
