Claud Schuster (1869-1956) served as Permanent Secretary for 29 years under ten Lord Chancellors, a record that has
not been broken. In February 1929, as Permanent Secretary to the then Lord Chancellor, Lord Hailsham, Claud
Schuster confinns in writing on House of Lords stationery, a re-appointment of Examiner of the Court for a further
five years. The recipient is lawyer and political writer, Robert Crawford Hawkin (1871-1939), brother-in-law of
General Louis Botha, first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa,
