Anthony AshBey-Cooper, '7th EarU of Shaftesbury

Member of Parliament for Woodstock, and known as Lord Ashley until he succeeded to the earldom on the death of
his father in 1851. The Earl of Shaftesbury was the most influential reformer of the nineteenth century, particularly in
respect of the abuses of child labour and factory conditions. No man ever did more to lessen the extent of human misery
or to add to the sum total of human happiness. This is his memorial, as well as that in Piccadilly Circus known as 'Eros'
