The Archbishop of Canterbury, Archibald Tait, with his official signature of 'A. C. (:antuar', writes a 'Private'
letter to Henry Grey, 3rd Earl Grey, the former Member of Parliament for various constituencies from 1826.
He was Secretary at War 1835-39 and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies 1846-52.
Archibald Tait was a churchman by conviction, but although the work of his life was all undertaken in England,
he remained a Scotsman to the end.
