SPACELAB
November 28, 1983. Launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia, mission STS-9 carrying in space
SPACELAB 1 for its first successful mission. The European astronaut Ulf Merbold was the payload
specialist, supported by the other three ESA astronauts, and Spacelab specialists, Ernst Messerschmid,
Reinhard Furrer and Wubbo Ockels.
April 29, 1985. For the second time Spacelab LM1 flew in space, aboard the Space Shuttle STS-51B.
This was the first mission with the Spacelab module in a fully operational configuration. Spacelab's
capabilities for multi-disciplinary research in microgravity were successfully demonstrated.
