October 22, 1992. Launch of Shuttle STS-52 bearing onboard IRIS (Italian Research Interim Stage),
the spinning upper stage built in Italy by Alenia and BDP, to be used to launch LAGEOS-2.
STS-52 also delivered into space LAGEOS-2 (Laser Geodynamics Satellite), the scientific research
passive laser reflector satellite for geodynamical studies of the Earth, built by Alenia under a contract
CNR/PSN as a joint NASA/ASI effort. LAGEOS was deployed from the Shuttle cargo bay using IRIS.
